There’s a crossover part for Pooky Quesnel as Ralpy’s protective mother, Louise, and new energy brought to the table by Dylan Brady as Ralph and Katie’s new support worker, Danny, who’s young and lacking in experience. ![]() Gordy’s the optimistic, sensible anchor to Harrop’s more stubborn, cynical partner, and their dynamic is hilariously and gently captured by the slightly eyebrow raise or pointed glance. Played with warmth and humour by Leon Harrop and Sarah Gordy, they’re a brilliantly natural couple, falling into their marital routine with a lived-in chemistry, even if the actual specifics of the routine are still something they’re working out. ![]() This comedy sets out to do the same thing for its two scene-stealing supporting characters, who have Down’s syndrome. The A Word took its title from the autism that young boy Joe was diagnosed with in Season 1, building a superbly observed family around him and giving every character – Joe included – the chance to grow and evolve without being defined by his diagnosis. The series follows Ralph and Katie, the newlyweds from Season 3 of Peter Bowker’s drama.
